Edition #145 – est 3/2020

The below is only for people who are fully vaccinated.
Many of you are experiencing a dilemma deciding what to do after a positive COVID-19 test or after a known exposure to someone with COVID-19. As of 12/23, the CDC has revised its guidance for Health Care Personnel (HCP).  Hospital administrators have stressed that these new changes allowing employees to resume work sooner would not put patients at risk. The same guidelines for the general public have not been changed.

However, if you’ve tested positive for COVID-19 or you’ve been recently exposed, I would think that following these new recommendations (which are for the most at-risk work force that exposes themselves to the general public) would also provide the most up-to-date guidance for you personally when deciding about seeing family and friends this holiday season.

Keep in mind that these new guidelines are not for the general public but only for HCP. The guidelines for you are much more restrictive…but are they actually safer if these are now the new guidelines for HCP? I’ll let you decide….

I hope this helps some of you when deciding if you can safely see friends and family moving forward. Happy Holidays, stay safe and be smart!

Below are excerpts from The CDC Updates:

  • If HCP with symptoms, negative results from one FDA Emergency Use Authorized COVID-19 viral test indicates that the person most likely does not have an active SARS-CoV-2 infection at the time the sample was collected.
  • Guidelines for Symptomatic HCP returning to work using day one as when symptoms first appeared:
  1. 7 days if one FDA Emergency Use Authorized COVID-19 viral test is obtained within 48 hours prior to returning to work
  2. 10 days – if no testing is performed
  3. 10 days if a positive test at day 5-7
  • Guidelines for Asymptomatic HCP returning to work with positive testing using day one as their positive test:
  1. 7 days if a negative FDA Emergency Use Authorized COVID-19 viral test is obtained within 48 hours prior to returning to work
  2. 10 days if testing is not performed
  3. 10 days if a positive test at day 5-7
  • Guidelines for HCP occupational exposure to known COVID-19 patient:
  1. In general, no work restrictions. (it’s impt to note that wearing a mask is assumed for HCP at their workplace, but no mention is made if masks should still be worn at home, etc if you had an exposure?)
  2. Perform SARS-CoV-2 testing 24 hours after the exposure and, if negative, again 5-7 days after the exposure.
  3. Quarantine if positive
  • Guidelines for HCP who have had prolonged close contact with someone in the community (e.g., household contacts) with known COVID-19:
  1. manage as described above for occupational exposure
